Lake Blanche Hike

Today a friend from work and I decided to go hike the Lake Blanche trail up Big Cottonwood Canyon, wow, was it gorgeous, but it was also a hike!  If you want to see a slide show of the pics I took, follow this link:

I've been planning a hike for the management team I work with and decided that Lake Blanche looked like a perfect hike (6 miles, round trip, beautiful scenery, etc) but I started to get worried because I kept finding comments about how hard of a hike it is.  So Jason and I decided to go check it out today.  We weren't disappointed.  It lived up to expectations... It was a GORGEOUS HIKE but also pretty steep.

We started up the trail at around 7:50 am and made pretty good time going up the mountain.  I'll tell you though, the last mile was where "champions are made" it was killer!  The trail has lots of switchbacks and steep climbs, even some climbing around and over some boulders.  It was pretty tough, but we kept seeing the top of the mountain in sight and we knew the lake was right on top.  Once we were almost there we came across a dad alone with a little girl who was maybe 6 or 7 years old.  Her knee was bloodied and she was holding her wrist, but she wasn't crying!  I called her a trooper and her dad told us that he thought she had a broken wrist, I felt so bad for her, but seriously she was tough.  She was trucking down the mountain without any help.  I couldn't help but to think how Brooklyn would react in the same situation...  I'm pretty sure all of Big Cottonwood Canyon would know about it.  What can I say, the girl has lungs!

We made it to the Lake by around 10:00am, and were blown away by it.  It's a beautiful lake perched directly under a peak called Sundial Peak.  It was a perfect scene, very pretty and very peaceful.  We walked around the lake for a while and found a cool waterfall but seriously we were getting eaten alive by mosquitoes so we decided to head back.

The way down was steep and tiring on the knees but manageable.  I'm so sore tonight though!  After we were done Jason and I decided that we should find another spot for our management hike, the last thing I want is to kill off a few of our managers and I have a feeling that this hike could do just that...

Here are some pics of the Lake Blanche hike:

Don't you love the dorky hat!  LOL
